The Rogue Valley is transforming from a colorful autumn to a sparkly winter. In the distance (and just a short drive away), the snow-capped mountains are beckoning adventurers to explore their billowy hills.

A true Southern Oregon gem, you haven’t experienced a real winter wonderland until you’ve visited Crater Lake when it’s blanketed in snow.

This natural wonder has something everyone in the family will enjoy, and it’s a favorite spot among locals throughout the year. You will spend many winter days exploring the beautiful lake and its surrounding areas, discovering something new every time.

Winter Adventures at Crater Lake

With an average of 42 feet of snow per year, Crater Lake is a highly desirable location for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The transformation from a summer recreation area to a winter oasis is something you will want to experience in person.

When you arrive, you’ll see the famous Rim Drive — which features a scenic look around the lake. However, it closes in the wintertime and becomes a designated ski and snowshoe trail.

Completing the entire, 31-mile circle of Crater Lake is better suited for more experienced winter adventurers and skiers, as it requires advanced knowledge and a backcountry permit. But don’t let this deter you from attempting this thrilling journey!

And if you’re looking for an easier hike, there are several other beautiful trails. One of the simplest and shortest ski trails in the park is the Mazama Loop, a 1.7-mile loop trail. It passes through the Mazama Campground and has amazing views of Annie Creek Canyon.

With adventures and trails for every skill level, a wintertime visit to Crater Lake is a must.

A Winter Wonderland in Southern Oregon

Whether you take the family sledding, hike one of the trails, or travel the Rim Drive, Crater Lake is a snow-filled paradise everyone will love.
